We have a large number of permanent, contract and fixed term jobs across the UK and Europe within a wide range of fields of work

The contractor and temporary recruitment market feels noticeably busier right now than the permanent market – and that probably says a lot about how businesses are feeling.

After a prolonged period of economic uncertainty, many employers still seem cautious about adding permanent headcount. Permanent hiring has slowed, but temporary, interim and contract recruitment appears to be holding up far better.  We are seeing elongated permanent hiring processes, which can leave a productivity gap – increasingly we are filling these gaps with a temporary resource, allowing the permanent hiring process to take it’s course.

For many organisations, contractors are becoming the “safe middle ground”. They offer flexibility, immediate expertise and a lower-risk option than making a long-term permanent hire. Businesses can bring people in to deliver projects, cover skill gaps, manage peak workloads or support transformation programmes without committing to fixed costs for years ahead.

We are also seeing more companies adopt a “blended workforce” model – keeping permanent teams lean, then using temps, interims and contractors to flex up and down as needed. It gives businesses greater agility in uncertain markets and helps them respond quickly to changing workloads, budgets and client demand.

The other big factor is skills shortages. In areas like technology, AI, data, finance, engineering and infrastructure, many employers are struggling to find permanent talent quickly enough. Contractors can often step in much faster and bring the exact expertise needed from day one. Many Nicholas Howard clients are clients are utilising contractors to carry out an urgent assignment and also provide training where appropriate to the existing team to maximise returns.

Interestingly, this shift is not just being driven by employers. More candidates are actively choosing contract and interim careers because they offer flexibility, variety, stronger earning potential and the chance to work on interesting projects across different businesses.

It feels like many employers are still in “wait and see” mode when it comes to permanent hiring, but they are far more willing to engage contract and temporary talent when there is an immediate need.

Is this just a short-term reaction to market uncertainty, or are we seeing a longer-term shift towards more flexible workforce models?

Nicholas Howard have filled 50% more temporary roles in Q1 2026 than we saw in Q4 2025, and over 40% of our current live job list is temporary or contract.  Why not contact our team now to discuss your requirements – +44 (0) 1264 810 076 or me directly on nick.bone@nicholashoward.co.uk

It would be interesting to hear whether others are seeing the same trend in their sectors.
