Environmental Safety & Health Assistant
Be the Person Who Keeps Everything Safe, Compliant and Running Smoothly
12-month contract / Inside IR35 / 37.5 hours per week across a 4-day working week
This is not a role for someone who wants to sit behind the scenes and simply tick boxes.
This is for someone who enjoys being at the centre of operations, keeping things organised, driving compliance, improving processes and making sure safety standards are always where they need to be.
If you enjoy balancing multiple priorities, maintaining structure, coordinating people and processes, and taking ownership of compliance, audits, training and safety systems, this could be the ideal next step.
Our client is a major player within the defence, engineering and technology sector, operating across highly regulated environments where health, safety and environmental standards are absolutely critical.
As Environmental Safety & Health Assistant, you will play a key role in supporting the wider ESH function, ensuring records are maintained, systems are up to date, audits are prepared for, and safety initiatives continue to move forward.
Why This Role Stands Out
- Play a central role in keeping the business safe, compliant and audit ready
- Be heavily involved in process improvement, compliance tracking and operational coordination
- Take ownership of ESH records, digital tools, policies and documentation
- Support audits, investigations, risk assessments and Net Zero initiatives
- Coordinate safety rosters, training records, first aiders, fire wardens and PPE
- Work closely with managers and staff across the business to drive best practice
- Join a business where safety, compliance and continuous improvement are genuinely valued
- Opportunity to travel across multiple UK sites and build exposure across the wider business
The Opportunity
This is a varied and hands-on position where no two days will be the same.
You will support the ESH function across a busy operational environment, helping to ensure the business remains compliant with both internal procedures and external regulations.
You will be involved in maintaining management systems to ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 standards, supporting audits, coordinating training requirements, reviewing risk assessments and helping managers identify and address workplace hazards.
You will thrive if you enjoy:
- Keeping documentation accurate, organised and audit ready
- Coordinating training, meetings, follow-up actions and safety activities
- Reviewing policies, procedures and risk registers
- Supporting investigations and ensuring actions are completed
- Managing rosters, PPE records and compliance systems
- Working across multiple teams and sites
- Spotting areas for improvement and implementing better ways of working
- Being seen as a reliable, organised and proactive point of contact
What We’re Looking For
We are looking for someone with previous experience in an Environment, Safety and Health role who enjoys the operational side of compliance and safety management.
You will likely bring:
- NEBOSH General Certificate in Occupational Health & Safety or equivalent
- At least two years’ experience within an ESH, health and safety or compliance-focused role
- Strong understanding of ESH legislation and workplace safety practices
- Excellent organisational and administrative skills
- Confidence working across multiple priorities and deadlines
- Strong communication skills and the ability to influence stakeholders
- Experience maintaining records, policies, procedures and compliance systems
- Good Microsoft Office skills
- A proactive, detail-focused and process-driven approach
- Full UK driving licence and willingness to travel between sites
